Low danger isn't no danger. Use active snow transport to identify pockets of shallow slabs may forming near ridgelines that could knock you off your feet in high consequence terrain. It's worth checking the bond with the underlying crust before engaging with consequential terrain on the upper mountain.

    Old wind slabs are gaining strength, and we think they are trending toward unreactive. The one situation that could get you into trouble is if wind stiffened snow lies above a poorly bonded 2/7 interface. It's worth a quick evaluation of the crust crust if you head to the highest NWAC forecast elevations or above. Perhaps the easier way to stay out of harm's way is to identify and navigate between areas of wind rippled or stiffened snow, and avoid steep, poorly supported slopes, and shallow rocky areas.  Warmer temperatures on Thursday may have eliminated much of the problem at middle elevations, so become more alert as you ascend higher or move to shaded aspects that heal less quickly.

    Very shallow slabs may also form near ridgelines as WSW winds increase into the moderate range on Friday. Steer around areas of freshly drifting snow proximal to ridgelines.

Avalanche Discussion

Windier and increasingly cloudy weather arrives on Friday. Breakable crusts may have formed on sun-exposed slopes. These are unlikely to soften with incoming winds and cooler temperatures. Take the extra time to navigate challenging snow conditions if you encounter them. Shallower slope angles and E, W, or N areas likely continue to offer higher quality riding conditions in dense, settled powder.

Milder weather on Thursday, combined with filtered sunshine to accelerated the healing process for our tricky wind slab setup from early in the week. It is a good time to remember that you're likelihood of triggering an avalanche, the size of that avalanche, and even the problem type can diverge above NWAC forecast elevations. You will need to carefully evaluate upper elevation slopes on Thursday, but plan to make your own assessments if you head above NWAC forecast elevation.

The last storm cycle brought 10" of snow (and 2-3" of water equivalent) above the widespread 2/7 crust. In some areas that storm ended with a bit of rime crust near the surface on Monday evening. East winds created shallow slabs up to size 1 on atypical aspects, while eroding the older large slabs (up to size 2.5) that formed through Monday night. These ESE winds and associated redistribution were observed round Timberline, but not further east near Mt Hood Meadows.

Looking ahead, fresh snow will arrive Friday night into the weekend, so expect increasing avalanche hazard heading into the weekend.

Coverage remains unusually thin (or non-existent) on wind-stripped W aspects of ridgelines, while easterly aspects hold thicker snowpacks (along with the potential for large wind slabs). Rocks, creeks, trees, and other shallowly buried objects are still prominent through the terrain and could easily exacerbate the consequences of an avalanche.
