New wind slabs have formed in the last 24 hours near and above treeline, and in some places, these fresh slabs sit on top of weak, old snow. Monitor for signs of instability, and build wide safety margins into your plans for the day.

    Moderate to extreme southwest winds moved available snow around yesterday and overnight. Recent field observations indicate fresh wind slabs have formed on the lee sides of ridges near and above treeline.  Cornices, blowing snow, drifts and pillows, and cracking in stiff surface snow are all signs of a wind slab avalanche problem.

    In many places, these new wind slabs have formed on top of weak, old snow, and may behave in unpredictable ways. Consider building wide safety margins into your tour plan today, and move to more sheltered terrain if you observe signs of instability.

    In the last week, 6 to 24 inches of new snow has fallen on top of a weak snowpack, characterized by facets and crusts. This structure exists up and down the forecast area near and above treeline on northwest, north and east aspects. In many areas, the new snow remains loose and unconsolidated, and signs of instability have been minimal. Areas of greatest concern will be where new snow has consolidated into a more cohesive slab. Continued strong winds, increasing clouds, and warming temperatures may be enough to create a slab where one did not exist prior.

    Persistent slabs are tricky to navigate and may not provide obvious feedback before an avalanche release. Shooting cracks, whumping, and rolling collapses are signs that you have found the problem. When planning your travel today, keep in mind that persistent slab avalanches can fracture into lower-angle terrain and can be remotely triggered from a distance. Consider giving suspect slopes and features a wider margin.

Avalanche Discussion

New wind slab avalanches will be problem number one today. The recent low-density snow has been redistributed by strong to extreme southwest winds. If you're looking to avoid wind slabs today, you can do so by avoiding leeward slopes near ridgelines and exposed terrain features.

It is worth considering that the wind slab problem and the persistent slab problem will generally exist in the same terrain - northwest, north, and east aspects near and above treeline. Resulting avalanches may act in surprising and unpredictable ways. Failures may break higher or wider than you may typically expect, and relatively small surface avalanches could break deeper into older snow. Consider this when setting your skin track and choosing your descent.

Today will be the last somewhat tranquil day before a powerful, multi-day storm event moves in overnight and continues through the middle of next week. The existing snowpack is in poor shape to handle this new load, and elevated avalanche hazard tomorrow and beyond is almost certain.
