Expect a dynamic day with slowly increasing danger as snowfall accumulates. New snow avalanche problems could range from fast running loose dry, storm slabs, and wind slabs, and they could all run on a slick crust. Slides may become easier to trigger later in the day, or once about 5" of snow has accumulated.

    As the new snow falls and begins to accumulate, you could trigger shallow, fresh slides on steep slopes. Avalanches could take many forms on Wednesday; Loose dry slides, storm slabs, and wind slabs. The danger may correlate directly to the amount of new snow that has fallen: Early in the day, danger may be minimal. Once about 5" of new snow has fallen we could start seeing shallow storm slabs and loose slides run easily on steep slopes. More than 10" and these may start to become more dangerous. 

    Pay attention to what you find out there. Look for signs of instability like small sluffs on steep test slopes, shallow slabs, and shooting cracks. Use these as a sign to keep your slope angles down.

Avalanche Discussion

Expect slick and slippery crust on steeper slopes, and the new snow may slide easily on it. Until we get more snow on top and it bonds well, make sure to bring appropriate equipment to prevent an uncontrolled fall on slick, frozen surfaces. Consider your descent routes with this in mind.

On Monday, Brooke Maushund and I went to the Lake Valhalla area. We found a slick and slippery crust beneath about 4" of new snow. We were able to trigger small loose avalanches, both wet and dry on steep test slopes. Wind drifts at were small and isolated up to 5,700ft, but we suspected they could be a little deeper and a little more of a problem in the alpine zone. On Sunday, observers in the Skyline Lake area found variable conditions and surfaces. Last friday and Saturday, a cycle of wet avalanches occurred while it rained to at least 6,000ft.
