Friday night brought in more snow and gusty winds out of the northeast with storm totals favoring the West and East Cabinets. Storm snow and wind slabs will be easily triggered today in terrain steeper than 35 degrees at treeline and above. Stay safe today by avoiding steep and wind effected terrain at upper elevations. The best and safest riding will be in timbered locations protected from the wind.

    Storm totals at Bear Mountain since Thursday night stacked up to 14 inches of snow, the Poorman Snotel recorded 1 inch of SWE in the last 24 hours. The new snow will be resting on a variety of crusts and wind scoured surfaces that my bond poorly with the new snow. General wind direction has transitioned the last 48 hours from southwest, to west and now coming out of the north and east. All terrain that is open enough to catch some wind will have snow that is drifted and slabby. Steep chutes and terrain directly below ridgelines should be avoided at Treeline and above today.

    Two issues exist here. There is a layer of buried surface hoar at Treeline and above on northeast aspects that is unlikely to be triggered at this time. The second issue is the crust layers in the upper snowpack that are layered with weak, sugary snow. These surfaces were not a concern Thursday, but as we load them and build a fresh slab above them they will become a problem that may stick around for awhile.

Avalanche Discussion

On Thursday Nate and I toured into the Keeler Creek area. We found stable conditions on all aspects, the most important observation of note is the wide array of surface conditions out there. On any given aspect there is some combination of crust layers that are sandwiched with facets. This set-up will give us a poor surface for the storm slab to bond with and may be a problem for awhile. I see this as our next "persistent slab" setting up, time will tell how persistent it may be. On Friday we made a quick trip back into the West Cabinets to see how the new snow was bonding with the existing snowpack. The snow came in pretty wet and warm, which was helping with the bonding concerns. The 4-5" that we picked up Thursday night was forming a thin and cohesive slab that was enough to keep me out of steep terrain. Friday night came in with another shot of storm snow, gusty northeast winds and a big drop in temperatures. The cold conditions are predicted to stick around for a few days, so bundle up and play a conservative game today. Getting injured in these weather conditions can become serious very quickly.
