Triggering avalanches in recently wind drifted snow will be possible on all aspects near treeline and above treeline. Most avalanches will be small, but small avalanches can have big consequences in steep terrain. Getting pushed into terrain traps such as cliffs, rocks, and trees can worsen the outcome of getting caught in a slide. You can minimize your exposure to avalanches by sticking to wind scoured slopes or by staying on low angle terrain.

    Variable winds shifting around the compass will create thin shallow wind slabs on a variety of aspects. Wind slabs will be more prominent above treeline. The mountains have only received a few inches of new snow over the last 24 hours but wind can deposit snow many times deeper. Most wind slab avalanches will be small. However keep an eye on changing conditions and monitor the depth of wind slabs. As slabs get deeper, avalanches can become larger. The melt freeze crust under the new snow is a good reference point for checking on the depth of wind slabs. Even small avalanches will have the potential to run farther than normal as they will move on a firm bed surface. As always, look for signs of unstable snow; cracking in the wind slab or previous avalanches are good indicators of unstable snow.  

Avalanche Discussion

As the sun comes out, we may see small wet loose slides on slopes in the direct sun. I expect these to be very small and limited to the depth of the new snow (several inches) from the last 24 hours. 

Be cautious when approaching ridgetops especially if you do not have a good vantage point to see if a cornice is present. Avoid stepping out onto a cornice. They can break under the weight of a person and send you tumbling onto the slope below.
