Avalanche Activity

The weather conditions fostered a strengthening of the snowpack in particular on very steep sunny slopes.

In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface. In all altitude zones hardly any more moist and wet avalanches are to be expected as the temperature drops. Weak layers exist deeper in the snowpack. Single winter sport participants can release avalanches in isolated cases. These can be triggered in deep layers and reach large size. These avalanche prone locations are barely recognisable, even to the trained eye. Thus far only isolated gliding avalanches are possible. In addition the wind slabs at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions are capable of being triggered in very isolated cases.

Snowpack Structure

Towards its surface, the snowpack is largely stable and its surface has a melt-freeze crust that is strong in many cases. 2 to 10 cm of snow will fall above approximately 1600 m. Up to 20 cm in areas bordering Piedmont. Especially steep shady slopes high altitudes and the high Alpine regions: Weak layers exist in the old snowpack. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.

Tendency

The backcountry and freeriding conditions are quite favourable. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface.
