Avalanche Activity

Gradual increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and wind.

Over a wide area 10 to 25 cm of snow will fall until the evening above approximately 1400 m. The sometimes strong wind will transport the fresh and old snow. As a consequence of snowfall and the moderate to strong northwesterly wind, fresh snow drift accumulations will form in the course of the day. These will form in particular between approximately 2100 and 2500 m. The fresh and older wind slabs can be released even by a single winter sport participant above the tree line. In localities where the wind is stronger danger level 4 (high) will be reached.

Snowpack Structure

The sometimes strong wind will transport the new snow and, in some cases, old snow as well. In particular in the vicinity of peaks snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular on steep northwest, north and east facing slopes.
