Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: The old snowpack will be frozen, hard and stable, with pockets of shallow softer snow. Above 900 metres, areas of unstable windslab will be present on mainly South-West to North-West aspects. Accumulations will not be widespread but will remain poorly bonded and in places lie on a fragile thin crust. Later in the day some redistribution to more Northerly aspects will occur with new windslab forming. Cornices will be present on some high Westerly aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Forecast Weather Influences: Dry and cold through the period with the freezing level around 300 meters rising only slightly through the day. Overnight winds from West or South-Westerly directions increase fresh to strong from the South by the end of the day. Observed Weather Influences: A bright and sunny day. Very cold with moderate North-Easterly winds. Minus 6 Celsius at around 1000 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The existing snowpack is frozen, hard and stable at all elevations with pockets of shallow softer snow. Areas of unstable windslab are present on South-West to North-West aspects mainly above 850 metres. These accumulations are generally shallow and not widespread but are poorly bonded and in places lye on a fragile crust. Small cornices are present on high Westerly aspects. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
