Avalanche Activity

The wind slabs remain for the foreseeable future prone to triggering at intermediate and high altitudes. Gradual increase in danger of moist and wet avalanches as the penetration by moisture increases.

Along the border with France light precipitation. As a consequence of warming moist and wet avalanches are possible as the day progresses, even large ones. More recent wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in all aspects and generally at elevated altitudes. This applies in particular on steep slopes, and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. The avalanches can be released in the new snow and wind slab layers and reach large size. Careful route selection and spacing between individuals are recommended.

Snowpack Structure

In particular along the border with France in some localities up to 15 cm of snow will fall above approximately 2200 m. As a consequence of high temperatures and rain up to intermediate altitudes the snowpack can not consolidate. These weather conditions will give rise to extreme moistening of the snowpack over a wide area especially at low and intermediate altitudes. Above approximately 1500 m a lot of snow is lying. At intermediate and high altitudes the wind slabs will increase in size moderately.
