Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Snowfall and drifting will continue the development of moderately to weakly bonded windslab. Avalanches are likely in wind sheltered locations on West to North aspects above 900 metres. Cross-loaded deposits will also develop, with minor amounts on South but mostly on South-West and North-East aspects. Steep wind sheltered terrain below 900 metres will also be affected. Fragile cornices will continue to develop. Wind exposed slopes will be firm and icy. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: New snowfall to all levels, heaviest overnight. Strong winds throughout, predominately Easterly. Observed Weather Influences: Snow showers throughout the period. Overnight, the freezing level rose to around the summits before lowering to 600 metres by early afternoon. Strong gale force winds from the East-South-East. ObservedSnowStability: There has been some consolidation of recent deposits but unstable windslab is rapidly developing in wind sheltered locations on some South-West but mostly West to North aspects above 900 metres. Moderately bonded snow is also present in steep sheltered locations above 600 metres. Fragile cornices have formed above these aspects. Slopes exposed to the winds are scoured and icy. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
