Avalanche Activity

Increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and wind. The fresh snow as well as the wind slabs represent the main danger. Backcountry touring calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger.

The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain and adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas. Large and, in isolated cases, very large natural avalanches are possible. The fresh snow as well as the wind slabs can be released easily, even by a single winter sport participant, in all aspects.

Snowpack Structure

The upper section of the snowpack consists of faceted crystals. The new snow and wind slabs are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack. Weak layers exist in the snowpack.

Tendency

Some snow will fall over a wide area. The weather will be cold.
