Avalanche Activity

The fresh snow and the wind slabs that are forming during the snowfall represent the main danger.

In all regions over a wide area 20 to 30 cm of snow will fall until the evening above approximately 1000 m. As a consequence of low temperatures, snowfall and the occasionally moderate southeasterly wind, an unfavourable avalanche situation will develop. The cold fresh snow and the wind slabs can be released very easily. Even single snow sport participants can release avalanches easily,, also on steep slopes. Backcountry touring calls for meticulous route selection. Natural avalanches: These weather conditions will bring about a weakening of the near-surface layers in all aspects. Dry slab avalanches and dry loose snow avalanches are likely to occur already in the early morning. Dry avalanches are possible as the day progresses, even large ones in isolated cases, in particular along the border with Switzerland and in the regions neighbouring those that are subject to danger level 4 (high).

Snowpack Structure

20 to 30 cm of snow will fall until the evening above approximately 1000 m. The moderate wind will transport the new snow. The fresh snow and the wind slabs are bonding poorly with the old snowpack. The wind slabs of the last few days will be covered with new snow and therefore difficult to recognise. 20 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell on Thursday above approximately 2000 m. The old snowpack is favourably layered. At low and intermediate altitudes only a little snow is lying.

Tendency

Some snow will fall on Tuesday. The danger will persist.
