Avalanche Activity

Generally favourable spring conditions. Avalanches from wet snow possible in the afternoon

In the highest altitudes of the High Tatras there is still dry wind-blown snow. In general, the snow is well stabilized and it is rarely possible to break off a slab avalanche on steep to extremely steep slopes, especially with high additional loads. The risk is wind-rolled pillows and slabs on the leeward sides of ridges and very steep couloirs with a large amount of new snow lying on top of frozen old snow. Smaller spontaneous avalanches and drifts of wet snow may also occur in the afternoon.

Snowpack Structure

The snow cover has stabilised due to the change in temperature, and the surface will be hard to icy in the morning. It will gradually soften during the day on sunlit slopes. There will still be frost and dry snow at higher elevations throughout the day. There is already patchy snow cover at lower and middle elevations.
