A generally favourable avalanche situation will prevail.

Fresh and somewhat older wind slabs are in some cases still prone to triggering. They are mostly small. The wind slabs are to be evaluated with care and prudence.

Snowpack The snow cover surface shows heavy impact from wind and sun over far-reaching areas. On the northern flank of the Alps and there, particularly from the Bernese Oberland into the Alpstein region, as well as from the Prättigau into the Samnaun, there are still layers of loose snow from the most recent period of snowfall, particularly on shady slopes and in the high alpine regions. Beneath the layer of fresh fallen snow and freshly generated snowdrifts from the last few days on the northern flank of the Alps particularly on north-facing slopes, there are expansively metamorphosed (faceted) layers embedded inside the snowpack in some places. In the southern Valais and in Grisons on north facing slopes, in addition, the entire old snowpack is expansively metamorphosed (faceted) and loose over widespread areas. Nevertheless, triggerings in the more deeply embedded weak layers inside the snowpack were registered only seldom during the last two weeks. Snow depths in the Swiss Alps continue to be far below average. As recorded at the measurement stations in flat fields at high altitudes, they reach only approximately half the customary snow depths for this juncture of the season. Observed weather review Wednesday, 01.03.2023 In the mountains it was predominantly sunny. During the afternoon, increasing amounts of cloud cover moved in from the south. Fresh snow - Temperature At midday at 2000 m, approximately -2 °C. Wind Winds were blowing from southeasterly directions,

• predominantly at moderate strength on the northern Alpine Ridge, at strong velocity in some places;
• in the remaining regions of Switzerland, winds were blowing predominantly at light strength.

Weather forecast through Thursday, 02.03.2023 Skies on Wednesday night are expected to be predominantly overcast. On the Main Alpine Ridge a small amount of snowfall is anticipated from the south. During the daytime hours on Thursday it will be rather sunny above the high fogbanks in the northern regions. South of the Main Alpine Ridge it will be only partly sunny. Fresh snow The snowfall level will lie below 1000 m. The following amounts of fresh snow are anticipated:

• in the Valais part of the Main Alpine Ridge: 5 to 10 cm;
• in the other parts of the Main Alpine Rige and southwards therefrom: less.

Temperature At midday at 2000 m, between -1 °C in the northern regions and -3 °C in the southern regions. Wind Winds at elevated altitudes will be blowing at light to moderate strength from southeasterly directions. Outlook through Saturday, 04.03.2023 On Friday in the southern regions, some residual cloud is anticipated, in the other regions of Switzerland it will be rather sunny above the high fogbanks (ceiling at 1800m). On Saturday it will be predominantly sunny in the mountains. The winds will continue to blow at light to moderate strength and on Friday will shift to northerly directions. Temperatures are expected to drop somewhat in the northern regions. In those regions where moderate avalanche danger prevails, the risks are expected to incrementally decrease, in the other regions of Switzerland danger levels are not expected to change significantly.
