Avalanche Activity

TO 31.12.24 Localised windslab and later wet snow instabilities on NW, N, NE and E aspects above 800m. Avalanche Hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Overnight localised unstable windslab will develop in steep wind sheltered locations on North-West through North to East aspects above 800 metres. Fresh cornices will also develop above these locations. The period of greatest instability will be overnight and during the early morning due to heavy rainfall at all elevations. After this it is expected that the remaining snow cover will begin to consolidate during the daytime. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snowfall through the evening and overnight will become heavy rain at all elevations, easing and turning to wintery showers during the morning. The winds will be gale force South-Westerlies. The freezing level will be 500 metres during the evening, rising above the highest summits during the night and then gradually lowering to around 900 metres by the end of the day. Observed Weather Influences: The overnight precipitation eased during the morning to give a largely dry day with some brighter spells during the afternoon. Light variable Northerly winds. The freezing level was around 900 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Fresh, moist snow overlying bare ground on most aspects above 800 metres. Isolated, shallow and avoidable accumulations of windslab have developed in wind sheltered areas on South-East through South to South-West aspects above 900 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low.
