Snowpack Structure

In particular at higher altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The surface of the snowpack will only just freeze. Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted and weak; its surface consists of loosely bonded snow, especially on steep shady slopes. On steep sunny slopes below approximately 2800 m only a little snow is lying.

Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs above approximately 2400 m.

The moist fresh snow and in particular the wind slabs formed during the snowfall represent the main danger. Since Monday wind slabs formed in particular in gullies and bowls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. These can be released, especially by large additional loads, on northwest to north to northeast facing aspects above approximately 2400 m. Caution is to be exercised at their margins in particular. These avalanche prone locations are to be found on very steep slopes. On wind-loaded slopes several small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized avalanches were reported. As the temperature drops there will be a rapid decrease in the danger of moist and wet avalanches during the night. In some localities a little new snow: The avalanche danger will persist.
