Lo esencial

The significant snow that fell yesterday (15-22 inches) will keep avalanche danger elevated. Natural avalanches are possible and human-triggered avalanches are likely. Don't be under or on slopes greater than 30 degrees. Continue to be leery of hidden obstacles within the new snow. Everitt Memorial Highway is unlikely to open today.

Wind slabs could be very deep. In the Eddies, 6-7 foot wind drifts were encountered. With moderate winds expected above treeline combined with plenty of low density snow available for transport, drifts and slabs could continue to build today. Stay clear of steep leeward slopes until the snowpack has time to settle. Natural avalanches are possible and human triggered avalanches are likely. Evaluate the snowpack carefully if venturing into avalanche terrain.

Shooting cracks, blocking, and hollow sounding snow are signs that wind slabs are nearby.

Significant snow fell yesterday. Storm slabs and dry loose sloughs are still on the radar for sheltered areas greater than 35 degrees. Light winds and temperature variations can create a soft cohesive layer of new snow that can break within the storm snow or on the old snow surface. Loose, dry, unconsolidated snow can release at a point and entrain more snow as the avalanche flows down slope. The primary concern with both of these avalanches is that they can drag you into more dangerous terrain such as cliff areas or terrain traps.

Avalanche Discussion

Be prepared for deep snow, cold temperatures, and low wind chills if heading into the backcountry today.

Everitt Memorial Highway (EMH) and Castle Lake Roads are closed. The word is that EMH will open either today or Friday. Due to the amount of snow received yesterday, it would be surprising if the road opened today. We'll keep you updated.

Pilgrim Creek Snowmobile Park is open. Some grooming operations have commenced. Logging operations have wreaked havoc on some of the roads. Bring your 4x4 and an adventurous spirit if you venture out that way.
