Lo esencial

The chance continues for skiers and riders to trigger pockets of soft slabs on steep, wind loaded terrain features at the upper elevations. Remember that even small slides can result in harsh consequences in unforgiving terrain such as cliff areas and couloirs. Avalanches are unlikely at the mid and low elevations today. Grand Teton National Park is closed. Practice social distancing directives and follow other current health care protocols.

At the upper elevations skiers and riders could trigger pockets of wind slab formed by southwest to westerly winds. These slabs could be 6 to 18 inches deep and large enough to injure or carry a person long distances on very steep slopes. These slabs will become more sensitive today in areas where they are rapidly warmed by direct sunlight and increasing temperatures.

Avalanche Discussion

A weak system will bring a chance for snow by sunrise although accumulations are to be light through the day. Temperatures are to be warmer with mountain highs reaching the upper twenties. Winds are to be northwesterly with five to fifteen mile per hour averages. The general avalanche will be Low tomorrow. Low hazard does not mean no hazard. Above 9000 feet, isolated pockets of soft slab could be triggered in steep, wind loaded terrain near ridge crests and cliff areas. Remember that small slides can cause injury in unforgiving terrain. Below 9000 feet, the snowpack is mostly stable and avalanches are unlikely.
