The snowpack is generally stable, and avalanches are unlikely in most areas. With another round of sunny, spring-like weather, pay attention as snow surfaces thaw throughout the day. You may be able to trigger small wet avalanches on the steepest sun-exposed slopes.

    The snowpack has mostly adjusted to being wet over the past week of rain, warming, and sunshine. Recent wet loose avalanche activity was minor and may continue with another round of sunny skies Monday. Watch for changing conditions as it warms up, especially later in the day. Steer around large terrain features greater than 35 degrees where you find wet unconsolidated snow surfaces. Identify terrain traps like gullies, narrow canyons, and cliffs where even a small avalanche could be consequential. If you see rollerballs, pinwheels, or find yourself sinking more than 6in deep into slushy wet snow, move to shady slopes or lower angle terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

The weather and avalanche conditions in the East South have been a rollercoaster ride so far in 2022. The first week of January brought 3-5ft of cold snowfall and a widespread natural avalanche cycle January 6-8. This past week was a major pattern change with warming temperatures and a mix of rain and high elevation snow. Clear skies and spring-like conditions over the past three days have thawed the snowpack and caused many areas to melt out significantly, especially at low elevations and in steep, rocky, sun-exposed terrain. No significant avalanches were observed Saturday and Sunday as NWAC forecasters got eyes on the terrain in the East South Zone from Crystal Mountain and White Pass.

In nearby zones, small wet loose avalanches and isolated cornice fall have been the most notable observations so far this long weekend. Right now there aren’t any specific layers we’re tracking in the snowpack and any unstable snow should be limited to the surface. With the ongoing warm weather, it wouldn’t be a surprise to hear of additional cornice falls Monday. Fortunately, these waves of snow are relatively small and not very overhung by Cascade standards. That said, keep an eye out for cornices capping ridgelines above you, and find routes that minimize the amount of time you spend underneath these possible hazards.
