Generally safe avalanche conditions exist, but watch out for a few remaining wind slabs in the alpine.  You’re most likely to find them in isolated pockets such as at the top or side of a gully and around rocky outcroppings.  Hazardous travel conditions are present including variable icy surfaces, open creeks, and downed trees.

    Small deposits of upper elevation wind slabs are unlikely to be reactive as we head into Sunday. You will find them in isolated pockets, and they are becoming more difficult to trigger.  A minimal amount of snow is forecasted Saturday night into Sunday, which is not expected to increase the avalanche danger. Look for wind-textured snow surfaces or smooth pillow-like deposits as indicators of these slabs.  Be alert if you enter steep slopes, as that is the mostly likely spot where you can trigger an avalanche. 

    Although unlikely, your highest chances of finding reactive wind slabs are around features near the top of a slope.

Avalanche Discussion

While the avalanche danger is low, continue to practice awareness of your surroundings and stay conscious of changing weather and snow conditions. Even small, isolated avalanches could pose a threat if you are above cliffs or around other terrain traps.  

A large storm delivered almost 5 inches of water to Stevens Pass on January 11-13. A widespread natural avalanche cycle occurred on January 12th. One very large wet avalanche ran naturally in the Wellington slide path, with a nasty debris pile gouging through the snowpack to the ground. Most dry slab avalanches seemed to run on the new/old interface from Jan 11th about 1ft below the surface.  We now have a generally strong and uniform snowpack sitting beneath the crust formed at the surface of the rain-saturated snow. 

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
