Avalanche Activity

GC for 10/2/22. Unstable windslab mainly on steep N-E-SE aspects above 900m. Cornices! Considerable hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh unstable windslab will add to existing accumulations mainly on North through East to South-East aspects above 900 metres with shallower and more localised accumulations at lower elevations. Gullies, corrie rims and ridge flanks will be particularly affected and recently formed cornices will be fragile. The older snowpack will be frozen and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snow showers throughout the period with strong South-West veering and becoming West-North-West winds. Remaining cold with the freezing level rising to around 500 metres in the morning before dropping again in the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: There were strong West-South-Westerly winds and occasional snow showers. The freezing level was around 600 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Localised accumulations of moderately bonded windslab are developing on North through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres with gullies, corrie rims and ridge flanks particularly affected. The older snowpack has become firm in the colder temperatures and is stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
