Avalanche Activity

LO for 23.2 Unstable windslab on N thru E to SE aspects above 950m. Greatest on NE-E. Fragile cornices also. Hazard Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will build in steep, wind sheltered locations, on North through East to South-East aspects above 950 metres. Greatest accumulations will be on North-East and East aspects. Terrain features most affected will be gully tops, scarp slopes and crag aprons. Fragile cornices will also develop above these aspects. Slopes exposed to the strong winds will be icy and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Throughout the period there will be continuous snow showers, heaviest in the morning. The winds will be strong to gale force South-Westerly, moderating slightly during the day. The freezing level will slowly rise to around 1000 metres overnight, then fall during the day to glen levels. Observed Weather Influences: It was a day of snow showers above 500 metres on strong Westerly winds. The showers were often a mix of snow and graupel. The freezing level slowly dropped to 600 metres throughout the day. ObservedSnowStability: Overnight the older snowpack has consolidated at all levels. During today some moderately bonded windslab has developed on steep wind sheltered North-East, East and South-East aspects above 950 metres. Fragile cornices are also developing above these aspects. All other aspects are scoured, icy and stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
