Avalanche Activity

SC for 10.01 Thaw conditions! Surface instability developing on steep NW through N to E aspects above 800m. Aval. Hazard - Moderate

Forecast Snow Stability: As thaw conditions become established, surface instability will develop in the isolated, deeper accumulations of windslab that exist on very steep terrain on North-West through North to East aspects above 800 metres. Any small cornices that exist will be prone to collapse, acting as a potential trigger. Eventually there will be a trend towards consolidation, especially in the shallow accumulations on easier angled terrain. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: After a dry night, precipitation arrives before daybreak, falling for a brief period as snow, then rapidly turning to rain as the freezing level shoots up to reach over 2000 metres within a couple of hours. Light South-South-Easterly winds overnight, increasing to become strong Southerly during the day. Observed Weather Influences: A dry day with a good deal of sunshine in some parts and variable low cloud in others. Light to moderate South-Westerly winds. Freezing level 700 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Isolated accumulations of moderately bonded windslab exist in wind sheltered locations on North-West through North to East aspects above 800 metres. Greatest amounts are present on steep terrain above 1000 metres on the high mountains North of the River Dee. Elsewhere there is a thin general cover of snow with the occasional icy patch or deeper drift. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
