Avalanche Activity

Below approximately 3000 m the danger of moist and wet avalanches will increase gradually in the late morning, in particular on steep sunny slopes.

The spring-like weather conditions from the late morning will give rise to a loss of strength within the snowpack in particular on sunny slopes. The danger of moist and wet avalanches will increase during the day. They can occur in particular in starting zones where previous releases have taken place. In addition a danger of ground avalanches exists, in particular on very steep grassy slopes. Backcountry tours, off-piste skiing and ascents to alpine cabins should be concluded timely. Avalanches can in some places be released in the old snowpack on steep shady slopes. These avalanche prone locations are rare and are therefore barely recognisable.

Snowpack Structure

The conditions are spring-like. The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will soften during the day. The solar radiation will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack especially at intermediate altitudes. Towards its surface, the snowpack is unfavourably layered. Less snow than usual is lying. At low and intermediate altitudes from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying. Today on very steep sunny slopes individual large avalanches were reported. This applies in the afternoon and. This applies adjacent to ridgelines above approximately 3500 m.
