Avalanche Activity

Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released especially by large additional loads at intermediate and high altitudes. Gradual increase in danger of moist and wet avalanches as a consequence of warming during the day.

As the day progresses on steep east, south and west facing slopes there will be a gradual increase in the danger of moist and wet avalanches. Avalanches can in isolated cases be triggered in the old snowpack and reach quite a large size. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially in steep terrain and at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. Backcountry tours should be started very early and concluded timely.

Snowpack Structure

The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust will soften during the day. The spring-like weather conditions as the day progresses will give rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack. Individual weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on shady slopes. In particular on sunny slopes as well as at low and intermediate altitudes from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying.
