Avalanche Activity

New snow above approximately 1000 m: Wind slabs in particular on steep north, northeast and northwest facing slopes.

In some regions up to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall until midday above approximately 1000 m. The wind will be moderate to strong. The fresh wind slabs are bonding poorly with the old snowpack in all aspects above approximately 2200 m. The fresh snow and the mostly small wind slabs represent the main danger, in particular adjacent to ridgelines. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised as well in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls. As a consequence of the ceasing of precipitation natural avalanches are possible in the afternoon, but they will be mostly small, especially on very steep slopes, and on wind-loaded slopes above approximately 2200 m. Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released by large additional loads, especially on very steep north and east facing slopes in particular between approximately 2400 and 2700 m in little used terrain.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 10 to 20 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Friday above approximately 1800 m. The new snow is lying on a crust in all aspects above approximately 2200 m. This snow is bonding only slowly with the old snowpack. The old snowpack will be well bonded on steep sunny slopes. Faceted weak layers exist in the snowpack on north, northeast and northwest facing slopes. In all regions in all altitude zones only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. Hardly any more avalanches were reported.

Tendency

As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation small to medium-sized natural moist avalanches are to be expected above approximately 2200 m.
