Cold temperatures and a refreezing upper snowpack will greatly limit any avalanche danger Thursday. However, significant hazards may still exist in the form of breakable crusts, icy slopes, and numerous early season obstacles. Give yourself extra time to navigate and manage these demanding conditions.

The West-South received rain well into the above treeline terrain Tuesday and Wednesday before cooler temperature allowed snowlevels to creep back down the hill side. Now, the upper snowpack is in the process of refreezing. This should help the snow gain strength and greatly limit any avalanche danger.

At upper elevations, a few inches of snow fell during the tail end of the storm giving the mountains a small dusting. If you travel into the alpine, you may find small isolated pockets of wind drifted snow. Keep your eyes peeled for smooth pillow-like drifts on the lee side of exposed slopes. While these potential avalanches should be small and relatively harmless, don’t let them knock you off your feet or push you into a terrain trap. 

As the snow surface becomes icy, the greatest hazard you face may be difficult travel conditions. Anticipate heavy wet snow, breakable crusts, and firm icy slopes. The recent warm, wet, and windy weather took its toll on the snow cover. Many previously buried obstacles reemerged. You’ll need to navigate around numerous open creeks, downed logs, and areas of thin coverage. Give yourself extra time to manage these demanding travel conditions.
