Avalanche Activity

CM for 22/2:Wet snow instabilities overnight NE, SE asp. above 850m. New thin windslab above 850m,on E aspects during day. Mod Haz

Forecast Snow Stability: There will be wet snow instabilities for a period overnight, mainly in steep North-East to South-Easterly aspects above 800m. Weak cornices around coire rims of these same aspects will be liable to collapse. Stability will then generally improve from daylight, although some thin new windslab development is possible in high, steep sheltered mainly Easterly aspects above 850 metres. Good stability on all wind scoured slopes. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Fluctuating temperatures over the period will bring some rain to all elevations overnight. The freezing level will then lower again to around 600 metres during the day, with some snow showers down to 400 metres. Overnight gale force Southerly winds will ease slightly and become West-South-West, then Westerly from first light. Observed Weather Influences: It has been a damp day, with bright periods and some rain. A steady thaw is in place below 600 metres. Isolated snow showers affected the area above 800 metres. The winds have been moderate to strong, mainly North-North-Westerly. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack has become moist to wet and stable below 600 metres. Accumulations of humid windslab, some deep in places, remain on steep mainly East to South-Easterly aspects above 700 metres. Residual weaknesses were noted in these deposits, which are in places only marginally bonded. Weak cornices are also in place above coire rims. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
