Avalanche Activity

Increase in danger of dry avalanches as a consequence of new snow and wind.

Wind slabs: 5 to 25 cm of snow will fall on Friday above approximately 2200 m, this applies in the afternoon. The weather report and anticipated change in the avalanche danger are uncertain. The avalanche danger should be investigated very thoroughly in the relevant locality. On Friday precarious wind slabs will form in particular in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation as well as at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions. They are bonding well with the old snowpack in all aspects. The number and size of avalanche prone locations will increase as the day progresses. The fresh wind slabs can in some places be released by a single winter sport participant and reach medium size. Restraint should be exercised because avalanches can sweep people along and give rise to falls. Small and medium-sized natural avalanches are possible.

Snowpack Structure

Less snow than usual is lying. On sunny slopes below approximately 2300 m from a snow sport perspective, insufficient snow is lying. The conditions below approximately 3000 m are spring-like, in particular on very steep sunny slopes. The surface of the snowpack has frozen to form a strong crust. In the last few days hardly any more avalanches occurred naturally.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will persist. As the temperature drops hardly any more moist and wet avalanches are to be expected.
