Snowpack

There has been repeated precipitation since Monday, falling as snow mainly in the high Alpine regions of the Bernese and Valais Alps. Initially on Thursday evening there will be thundery precipitation, followed by widespread and persistent precipitation in the north and east on Friday, with the snowfall level dropping. Dry avalanches may occur mainly in the new and drift snow. Below approximately 3000 m, the old snowpack is soaked for all aspects. Wet avalanches are to be expected in the event of heavy rain.

There is more snow at high altitudes than is normally the case at the end of May. On the flat monitoring sites at 2000 m there is widely approximately 130% and at 2500 m as much as 160% of the long-term average. At 2500 m, the last time that there was more snow than now at this time of year was at the end of May 2019.

At the weekend, it will be cloudy to very cloudy in the north with intermittent precipitation. The snowfall level will rise to 2200-2400 m on Saturday and to 2400-2600 m on Sunday. It will be sunny at times on Saturday in Valais, and on both days in the south, with cumulus clouds and localised showers as the day progresses. The wind will ease and be light to moderate, blowing from the north.

The danger of dry avalanches will decrease. Moist snow slides and avalanches arising as a result of the new snow are to be expected as the day progresses in the event of rain or incoming radiation.

There will be wintry conditions in the high Alpine regions. Hikers should also pay attention to the avalanche danger, because wet avalanches can sometimes hit areas without any snow cover.
