A few inches of new snow fell in the Tetons with the west side being most favored. Skiers and riders venturing into steep, avalanche-prone terrain at the mid and upper elevations could trigger dangerous persistent slabs ranging in depth from two to four feet. Backcountry travelers could also trigger shallow pockets of newly developed wind slab and loose snow sluffs in very steep, leeward terrain near upper elevation ridgelines, and a conservative approach to terrain management is still warranted above 7,500 feet. At the lower elevations, backcountry travelers might be able to trigger an isolated pocket of soft slab in very steep gullies and ravines.

    Weak, faceted snow that formed during the December dry spell can be found on most aspects above 7,500 feet. Across the landscape, the overlying slabs vary greatly in their thickness and ability to propagate failure of the persistent weak layers below. These slabs could be triggered by the first person on a slope or after the slope has been skied numerous times, and previous tracks are not an indication of stability.

Avalanche Discussion

A dry high pressure ridge will be over western Wyoming. Skies are forecast to be partly cloudy. Temperatures will drop into the teens overnight and rise into the 30s during the day. As the axis of this ridge passes moves over the region the winds will back towards the southwest and begin to increase ahead of the next approaching low pressure system.Areas of unstable snow persist and serious avalanche accidents are possible. On avalanche prone slopes large slab avalanches two to four feet in depth could be triggered by the weight of a single person or after a slope has been previously crossed by other skiers or riders. Expert terrain analyses skills, a thorough understanding of our persistent slab avalanche problem and conservation terrain choices are still essential for safe travel in avalanche terrain. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE above an elevation of 7,500 feet and LOW below that elevation.
