Lo esencial

From tip to tail and around the compass, the avalanche danger is generally LOW and human triggered avalanches are UNLIKELY.

Remember... LOW danger doesn't mean it's alright, send it if it's whitedanger, and there might be a rogue, fresh drift or two reactive to our additional weight, especially in big, open alpine terrain. Don't forget, the Uinta's are a big place, and conditions can change from one drainage to another, so I gather snowpack intel throughout the day to help make solid decisions, especially as I step into sustained, steep, committing slopes.

    I think you'd be hard pressed to trigger an avalanche today, but remember, we do still have some structurally challenged snow hanging around in steep, rocky terrain on the north half of the compass. And even though the snowpack is beginning to relax and the likelihood of triggering a deep, dangerous avalanche is decreasing, we gotta be on our game, particularly when we start stepping into burlier terrain and gunning for more creative objectives..

    Remember... all we need to do is find a thin portion of the snowpack like around a rock or bush, collapse the slope (whumpf), and now we're staring down the barrel of a bigger avalanche than we bargained for. Although the chance of triggering a big slide is unlikely, I'm still avoiding steep, rocky slopes, with a shallow, weak snowpack.

There have been no significant avalanches reported from across the range in over a week.

Snow and Weather

Nowcast - The weather department is currently a bit out of sorts and underwhelmed, but appreciates your calls and "get well soon" letters. But early reports and lab tests indicate clear skies and winds blowing 15-25 mph from the west and southwest, while temperatures start their day in the upper teens and low 20's °F.

Forecast - Look for partly cloudy skies with high temperatures hovering in the low to mid 30's °F. Moisture grazing to the north ushers in a band of cloudiness and bump in winds, which shift to the the northwest and swirl into the 30's near the high peaks. Overnight lows dip into the teens.

Futurecast - Storminess has confirmed a desert reservation for the weekend and sets its sights on the southern half of the state to wrap up the workweek. The northern mountains are the recipient of clouds and cooler temperatures. I got nothin' for ya next week... a return to high, dry, and slightly cooler temperatures.

Travel Conditions - Supportable snow depths across the range step onto the scales in the flyweight category with just 1'-4' of settled snow above 9,000'. Below that, and on many solar aspects, the pack is thin or even non-existent, and access is a challenging mixed bag of patience and perseverance... with a little suffer-fest thrown in to keep ya honest.

Got to spend the day with two rugged individuals in the east Moffit cul de sac Tuesday. Ted Scroggin, who's been around for a minute or two and knows the Uinta zone better than anyone, and Moffit Peak who graced us with the invite to visit. In either case, I feel privileged for the opportunity to spend some time with these two legends :)
