Lo esencial

Natural and human-triggered avalanches are unlikely today. While the danger is low, Isolated pockets of reactive wind slab may persist in complex terrain.  Normal travel protocol is advised.

    The wind has touched almost every aspect and elevation in our forecast area. This hard surface is broken up into softer snow in only the most isolated and sheltered locations. Below the surface of the snow, the snowpack is behaving as one large cohesive unit. Several pits in the Sardine Can area of the BWRA did not produce results.  The surface of the snow on northerly aspects consists mainly of a windboard layer 2-4" thick. In the most isolated and complex areas above and near treeline, this windboard may act like a slab. We could not get breaks in this surface layer larger than half of a ski length. 

Avalanche Discussion

As the conditions change this weekend with warming temperatures, more humans will venture out into more complex terrain. In extreme terrain, small pockets of windslab may exist.  This consequential terrain should be evaluated carefully. Sunny weather and above-freezing temperatures will create excellent conditions for travel in the mountains this weekend. As the angle of the sun grows higher in the sky, solar radiation may be of concern around south-facing rocks. Small point releases in rocky and snowy terrain remain a concern, yet we anticipate are so isolated in nature, we did not add loose wet to our problem list.
