The avalanche danger is Low in the majority of terrain today. The exception to this is on steep wind loaded slopes in the upper elevations, where lingering pockets of wind slab may still be triggered by riders today. In this specific terrain the danger is Moderate. Warming temperatures and periods of sunshine this morning will make triggering these slabs more likely. Expect shallow wet loose activity on steep sunlit aspects as well. Increasing clouds in the afternoon will help to lessen the likelihood of triggering avalanches.

    Wind slabs have formed in steep upper elevation terrain. This is the result of a storm on March 8 that deposited up to 10” of light density snow and a storm on March 13 that put down 2-6” of more dense snow. Strong winds predominantly out of the west and southwest redistributed this snow to create areas of wind slab that remain sensitive to human triggers. While the likelihood has gone down and the relative size is small, less than a foot deep, warm temps and sunshine will make triggering possible today.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Skies will remain partly cloudy overnight. Ridgetop temperatures will only dip slightly, into the high teens, before climbing into the high twenties to low thirties tomorrow. Overall temperatures will be five degrees warmer than today. Winds will be out of the west at 15 mph overnight and back to the southwest at 20-25 mph during the day tomorrow. Wind speeds will increase ahead of the next system. Clouds will be on the increase throughout the day and snow showers will develop later in the day. Daytime accumulations will be in the trace to 2” range across all three forecast areas.The snowpack in the Southwest Trails forecast area has shown to be the most active in the past 12 hours. In that area the danger will be Moderate where it will continue to remain possible to trigger avalanches 1-2 feet deep. In the Tetons and on Togwotee the possibility will remain for lingering wind slabs to be reactive in very steep terrain but be much smaller in size and distribution. Warm temperatures and sunshine will increase the likelihood of triggering avalanches tomorrow. That likelihood will begin to go down as cloud cover increases and the temperatures drop.
