Lo esencial

Additional winter weather is near, but for now, a warm and sunny day is the short story. As we move from winter into spring, wet loose avalanches are the main avalanche problem to consider on steep, southerly slopes. Looking ahead, wind and storm slabs will be back on the docket for the latter half of the weekend.

Good old California sunshine will try to break down snow surfaces on southerly, sunny aspects today. These weather factors will compete against increasing cloud cover and wind, so it's not a slam dunk that wet loose avalanches will materialize. What to look for is easy however: if you start to see the surface snow become wet with pinwheels, rollerballs, and/or small natural wet loose avalanches on steeper slopes, change aspect and/or slope angle and move away from terrain traps where even a small avalanche could do some damage.

Avalanche Discussion

Happy Saint Patrick's Day! Bust out that green. The current avalanche risk is low, and our information points to a quiet and stable snowpack. Keep the larger picture in mind, however. This is the time of year when avalanche danger is dynamic: a winter storm can be immediately followed by blazing sun, rain on snow...you name it, it's all possible. Right now, things are mellow. This weekend, winter weather is back. Stay vigilant! As always, share your observations with us and your local backcountry community.
