Again, temperatures in the mountains are a few degrees warmer than yesterday. The chance continues for riders or skiers to trigger slab avalanches above 9000 feet this morning and above 7500 feet this afternoon. These slabs were formed during heavy snow and strong winds last week and will be more prone to failure this afternoon as daytime warming occurs. The avalanche danger is Low below 7500 feet where slab avalanches are unlikely today. The chance for wet slide activity will also exist this afternoon as snow surfaces soften. Evaluate the snow and terrain carefully to avoid these avalanche concerns.

    Although the dense to hard slabs formed last week have gained strength, failure remains possible on weak snow or hard crust layers buried during the early days of the storm. These slabs could have depths from one to three feet. The potential to trigger these slabs will increase with warming temperatures and direct sunlight. Beware of cornice areas today as potential cornice failure could also trigger one of the potentially very large slabs.

    The chance remains for backcountry travelers to trigger very large deep slab avalanches on northerly aspects above 9,000 feet. If triggered, these dangerous hard slabs could involve the full depth of the snowpack. These slabs could be triggered by larger loads such as snow machines or groups of people, or step down from the release of wind slabs.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Another day of sunny and warm temperatures are expected for Wednesday. Below freezing temperatures are expected at all elevations in the morning. Highs above freezing are expected on summits again with the warmest conditions expected in sunlit basins near 9000 feet. At low elevations temperatures are to again rise into the thirties.The avalanche danger will increase tomorrow as warming occurs. Slabs formed during last weeks storm will be most susceptible to failure at the high elevations, where weak layers are most buried and preserved. These slabs have the potential to be large. Wet loose and wet slab activity may also become possible tomorrow afternoon, particularly at mid elevations where snow under the surface crust remains warm from recent rain. As opposed to last week, when low elevations held the weakest snow, cold temperatures have bonded the upper portion of the rain soaked snowpack and avalanches are unlikely except in areas where excessive warming occurs. The rating will the Moderate at high elevations, and will rise from Low to Moderate below 9000 feet.
