You are most likely to encounter an avalanche at mid-elevations where wet, unfrozen snow wants to shed off cliffs or down steep slopes. Limit travel on or below steep terrain where the snow is wet, sticky, or unsupportable.

    Wet snow avalanches will likely be concentrated at mid-elevations, where significant new snow accumulated earlier in the week. At this elevation, mild temperatures and less wind will keep the upper snowpack warmer, wetter, and less consolidated. At higher elevations, the snow surface will likely start to crust over and be less prone to slide. Minimal snow cover is found in most low-elevation terrain.

    Both natural and human-triggered wet avalanches are possible. Pay attention to any snow that starts to move with you when descending. Don’t linger on or directly under places where you see active signs of instability, like rollerballs, pinwheels, or small wet avalanches. These often start in steep rocky or treed areas that shed snow onto a steep slope below.

Avalanche Discussion

Field obserations have been limited since the weekend. One person out today in West North reported good conditions with dry powder on northerly aspects. South aspects were heavily sun affected with wet, unconsolidated snow that made for knee-deep boot penetration when they stepped off of their skis. Any aspect that saw sun in the past two days will likely be topped by crust or at least be sticky and thickened up. Signs of wet avalanche activity that occurred on Tuesday were observed on east and west aspects. 

Observers in Snoqualmie Pass reported numerous wet loose avalanches up to D2 off the east face of Roosevelt on Wednesday morning. While shaded aspects held plenty of wind-drifted snow, winds slab were unreactive despite lots of testing. Good riding conditions were found on shaded northerly aspects. Less but still notable wet avalanche activity was reported from Stevens Pass.
