Lo esencial

Strong easterly winds at upper elevations will be transporting snow into fresh wind slabs up to 1' deep. Human triggered avalanches on recently wind loaded slopes are likely. Larger avalanches on buried weak layers are unlikely due to a lack of recent snowfall. Wet loose avalanches at lower elevations and glide avalanches are additional concerns to keep in mind.

    Strong east winds averaging 40 mph at ridgetops are forming fresh wind slabs up to a foot deep at treeline elevations and above. The Summit Lake area has only received a trace of new snow so far. Despite the lack of snowfall, the strong winds will still be able to transport snow onto leeward slopes and form fresh wind slabs. To identify wind slabs look for active wind transport, shooting cracks, and hollow feeling pillows of snow near ridgelines and convex features. Human triggered avalanches in wind loaded areas are likely.

    Warm springlike temperatures are causing wet loose avalanches and rollerballs at mid and low elevations. With rainline around 1000' today, we expect wet loose avalanches to continue.

    Glide Avalanches: Several glide cracks have been slowly opening through the region with one releasing a few days ago on the south end of Seattle Ridge. We recommend trying to avoid traveling underneath glide cracks if possible.

    The Summit Lake area is still harboring a thin and relatively weak snowpack in some areas. However, the recent lack of snowfall is making avalanches on buried weak layers unlikely. The most concerning locations for potentially triggering a larger avalanche on a buried weak layer are high elevation start zones where wind loading could add stress to the snowpack. Deep persistent avalanches are typically triggered from a thin spot in the snowpack which can propagate onto an adjacent slope. To avoid this issue you can stick to low angle or lower elevation terrain.

    Snowpack at 2,400' on Summit Mountain. Poor structure exists with a weak layer of facets below a large 3' slab. However, we did not get any concerning results and it is unlikely the weight of a person would be able to trigger this weak layer
