Lo esencial

The general avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE. Snowfall from recent storms has resulted in surface slabs to four feet in depth that could be triggered by backcountry users today in steep terrain. These slabs have the potential to trigger deeper instabilities that lie on or near the ground surface resulting in large avalanches that may run full path. It may require several passes over a slope for a slide to start. Debris from small slides in ravines or steep slopes that pile up against trees can instantly reach lethal depths.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. ) A weak system will move over the region tonight bringing 2 to 4 inches of light snow to the mountains by mid day Wednesday. Daytime highs should rise into the low twenties. Ridgetop winds should slow and be west to northwesterly at 15 mph.AVALANCHE HAZARD FOR THE TETON, TOGWOTEE PASS/CONTINENTAL DIVIDE AND GREYS RIVER/SOUTHWEST TRAILS AREASThe general avalanche danger will decrease to CONSIDERABLE at the mid and upper elevations on Wednesday. Time and settlement should strengthen the snowpack although new soft slabs to three feet in depth could be easily triggered near ridgetops and slides will still be easily triggered on steep slopes at upper and mid elevations. In areas that see little backcountry traffic the potential is greater for larger destructive slides. Backcountry users are advised to consult area specific forecasts issued every morning as new information may become available and unexpected weather can change conditions.
