Avalanche Activity

CM for 23/01/23 Residual wet snow instability N through E to S aspects above 900m. Collapsing cornices. Moderate Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Consolidating snow in many places. Residual wet snow instability on steep N through E to S aspects above 900m. Weakening cornices above these locations will impose a large load on these slopes in the event of collapse. Minor full depth avalanches cannot be ruled out from steeply inclined benches and shelves on NE to E facing crags, many are loaded with deep snow. Falling ice a potential hazard in same locations. Better stability on less steep ground. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Remaining dry and mild. Observed Weather Influences: Some brief early snow showers over summits then mild and drizzly with moderate South-West winds. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack is thawing at all elevations though deeper layers not yet affected by milder temperatures. Some wet snow instability on steeper North through East to South aspects above 900m many of which are overhung by weakening cornices. Better stability on less steep ground at lower altitudes. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
