A generally favourable avalanche situation will prevail.

Snowpack

The small amounts of fresh fallen snow and freshly generated snowdrift accumulations are being deposited on top of a relatively favourable snowpack surface. As a consequence of the rainfall last weekend the snow cover's near-surface layers are moist up to approximately 2800 m altitude, at lower altitudes near-surface layers are thoroughly wet. Through the lower temperatures the near-surface layers of snow have frozen and are stabilising to an increasing degree. More deeply embedded inside the snow cover there are encrusted layers frequently evident up to approximately 2600 m altitude. In the high alpine regions the fresh snow and snowdrift accumulations which formed over the weekend are stabilising somewhat more slowly. As yet, there are no markedly weak layers evident inside the snowpack.

Weather forecast through Tuesday, 21.11.2023

On Monday night in the northern regions, precipitation is expected to set in. During the daytime hours on Tuesday, skies will be heavily overcast accompanied by precipitation. The snowfall level will lie at approximately 1200 m. In the southern regions it will be quite sunny.

Fresh snow

Between Monday night and Tuesday evening the following amounts of fresh snow are anticipated above 1500 m:

• northern flank of the Alps: 5 to 10 cm;
• in the remaining regions of Switzerland, only a few centimetres, or else it will remain dry.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, between -3 °C in the northern regions and 0 °C in the southern regions.

Wind

• Winds in the northern regions will be blowing at light to moderate strength, and shift from westerly to northerly;
• winds in the southern regions will be blowing at moderate to strong velocity from northerly directions.

Following a night of partly clear skies, in the northwestern regions skies were overcast during the daytime hours. In the southern and the eastern regions it was quite sunny.

Temperatures dropped. At midday at 2000 m, to between +2 °C in the northern regions, and to +5 °C in the southern regions.

Wind

Winds in the high alpine regions were blowing intermittently at strong velocity, in the other regions of Switzerland blowing at moderate strength, from westerly directions.

Outlook through Thursday, 23.11.2023Wednesday

In the northern regions, precipitation is anticipated by Wednesday midday, subsequently it will become dry and, in the western regions, turn increasingly sunny. By the end of this round of precipitation, an additional 10 to 20 cm of fresh snow is anticipated on the northern flank of the Alps. The snowfall level will lie at approximately 800 m. A moderate-strength northeasterly wind will be blowing, blowing frequently at strong velocity in the high alpine regions. On the southern flank of the Alps it is expected to be quite sunny as a result of the strong northerly winds. Avalanche danger levels are expected to increase somewhat at elevated altitudes on the northern flank of the Alps; in the other regions of Switzerland avalanche danger will not change significantly.

Thursday

On Thursday it will be sunny and mild. The zero-degree level will ascend to 3800 m. Avalanche danger levels are expected to decrease slightly in the northern regions, in the southern regions avalanche danger will not change significantly.
