Avalanche Activity

There is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface. As a consequence of new snow and wind the prevalence and size of the avalanche prone locations will increase towards the evening.

The wind slabs are clearly recognisable. They can still be released in some cases. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. Even in moderately steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the icy crust. As a consequence of new snow and wind the avalanche prone locations will become more prevalent towards the evening. The natural activity of dry avalanches will gradually increase.

Snowpack Structure

The Avalanche Warning Service currently has only a small amount of information that has been collected in the field. As a consequence of highly fluctuating temperatures and the strong northwesterly wind, a crust formed on the surface. In many cases wind slabs are lying on a hard crust. Above approximately 2800 m snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Below approximately 2200 m only a little snow is lying. The old snowpack will be generally well bonded.

Tendency

Monday: Evening and night: In particular along the border with France, along the border with Switzerland and on the Monte Rosa some new snow: The number and size of avalanche prone locations will increase. Some fresh snow and the small wind slabs will be deposited on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack in all aspects.
