Avalanche Activity

The fresh wind slabs represent the main danger. At elevated altitudes the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent and the danger is greater.

As a consequence of the moderate to strong northwesterly wind the avalanche prone locations will become more prevalent as the day progresses. Wind slabs can in some cases be released easily, especially on very steep slopes above approximately 2400 m adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas. At transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack the likelihood of avalanches being released is greater. Isolated small and medium-sized dry avalanches are possible as a consequence of the moderate to strong northwesterly wind. As a consequence of falling temperatures, the natural activity of small and medium moist and wet avalanches will rapidly decrease.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area there is more snow than usual. Very cold valley floors for same days and mild temperatures as you rise in altitude. Locally, on steep sunny slopes, the snow has moistened. As a consequence of highly fluctuating temperatures and solar radiation a crust formed on the surface during the last four days. Towards its base, the snowpack is largely stable. In the last five days on very steep grassy slopes several small and medium-sized avalanches occurred naturally.

Tendency

In some regions some new snow. The wind will be strong to storm force adjacent to ridgelines. The danger of dry slab avalanches will increase during the day.
