At the upper elevations dense wind slabs lie upon firm old snow surfaces. These slabs could be human triggered in steep terrain. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully. Avalanches are unlikely at the mid elevations. Snow depths range from one to two feet at the upper elevations, from 5 to 15 inches at the mid elevations and are mostly less than six inches deep at the lower elevations.

    At the upper elevations dense winds slabs up to two feet in depth could be human triggered in steep avalanche starting zones. These slabs were formed by strong southwest winds.

Avalanche Discussion

Snow shower activity is forecast to increase overnight and bring two to four inches of new snow to the higher elevations before tapering off on Wednesday. Temperatures will remain in the 20s in the mountains. West winds at 10 to 20 miles per hour will decrease to 10 to 15 miles per hour during the day.The general avalanche hazard in the Greys River/Southwest Trails and the Togwotee Pass/Continental Divide areas is expected to be LOW. In those regions some potential may persist for humans to triggered small pockets of wind slab in the highest avalanche starting zones.The general avalanche hazard in the Teton Region is expected to be MODERATE above an elevation of 9,000 feet and LOW between an elevation of 9,000 and 8,000 feet. In sufficient snow depths exist below 8,000 feet for avalanche activity. Human triggered slab avalanches up to 18 inches in depth are possible in steep wind loaded terrain at the upper elevations.
