In steep avalanche terrain at the mid and high elevations skiers and riders have the potential to trigger loose snow sluffs, very soft surface slabs, and deeper dense slabs that formed during the storm system earlier this week. These slabs will be most sensitive and larger at the high elevations where combined with the new snow may have total depths to four feet. At the mid elevations total crown depths of three feet are possible and at low elevations avalanches are unlikely in the shallow snowpack.

A winter weather advisory is in effect through 6pm Saturday. Strong southwest winds with averages near thirty miles per hour are expected as moderate to heavy snowfall occurs through the night and into Saturday afternoon. Temperatures are to rise into the upper teens to low twenties. The general avalanche hazard is expected to increase to HIGH during the day on Saturday above 8000 feet in all three forecast areas. Natural avalanches and easily triggered avalanches to depths of four feet are expected in steep wind loaded avalanche terrain as new snow and strong winds add additional loading to the already sensitive slabs.
