Avalanche Summary

An Avalanche Watch is in effect for the Flat Tops and Elkhead Mountains. New snow and strong winds will create very dangerous avalanche conditions starting Thursday night and lasting through Saturday. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended during this time.

You can trigger a small avalanche in drifted snow at the highest elevations. If you see cracking in the new snow, that's a sign you could trigger an avalanche. Look for and avoid drifted pillows directly below ridges and in gullies. Small slides in the new snow can be the trigger for larger avalanches. Slopes with exposed trigger points and variable snow cover are the most likely places to trigger a deeper avalanche. Look for wind-sheltered slopes or slopes less than about 35 degrees for safer riding.
