The most dangerous slopes face a northerly and easterly direction where you find recently drifted snow. Winds drifted snow into a dense, cohesive slab that rests on top of a buried weak layer two to four feet deep. Look for and avoid slopes that look textured and feel hollow or drum-like underneath you or have lens-shaped pillows of snow. Wind-sheltered slopes offer safer travel options.
