Multiple rounds of wind have loaded unusual aspects creating wind slabs. Wind slab conditions are gradually easing, but with cold temperatures, this process takes a long time. A recent observation showed the slabs may be covered by several inches of new snow showing little sign of wind effect. Look for signs of recent wind transport a few inches below the surface.
Steer around slopes steeper than 35 degrees where wind slabs have likely formed, using visual clues like textured snow, blowing snow and fresh drifts. Feel for firm or hollow snow. If you can't tell which slopes have been loaded, choose lower angled terrain.
