Avalanche Activity

Wet-snowslides possible on sunny slopes. Favorable backcountry touring conditions.

Low danger prevails in Styria. Isolated avalanche prone locations occur on north-facing slopes, where there is a persistent weak layer. A slab avalanche triggering on extremely steep shady slopes cannot be ruled out. On sunny slopes, wet loose-snow slides can release in steep rough and rocky terrain during the daytime.

Snowpack Structure

On north-facing slopes in the Northern Alps and Niedere Tauern, older snowdrifts lie deposited atop a compact old snowpack. On shady high altitude slopes there are faceted crystals inside the snowpack structuring. On shady forest lanes the snow is still unbonded. On sunny slopes the snowpack was able to settle, a melt-freeze crust (usually capable of bearing loads) formed. South of the Mur-Mürz rift the snowpack is stable. Melt-freeze or wind crusts dominate. In zones where there is little snow, it is expansively metamorphosed.

Weather Synopsis

After a very sunny start to the day, some clouds will move in as of midday on Thursday, one or another peak could recede into the fog. Mostly it will remain sunny. The winds will intensify somewhat, be blowing at brisk strength from the northwest. At 2000 m: -7 degrees. As a result of cold northerly-to-northwesterly winds on Friday, a few clouds will pass through, particularly in the northeastern mountain regions, and the higher peaks might be shrouded in fog. It is expected to remain dry, by and large. Most sunshine is expected along the border to Carinthia.

Tendency

No significant change in avalanche danger levels is anticipated.
