Avalanche Activity

LO for 10/3. Unstable windslab mainly on NW-N-E aspects above 900m, stability poorest early morning. Cornices! Considerable Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh windslab will be present initially, mainly on North-West through North to East aspects above 900 metres. This will undergo a period of reduced stability during the early morning as the freezing level rises above the summits with stability improving in the afternoon. Slopes exposed to the strong winds will be generally stable. Cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Precipitation in the evening will fall as snow above around 500 metres. During the morning further light precipitation will fall as snow only on the higher summits. Light South-East winds soon become strong and then veer Southerly during the day. The freezing level will rise above the summits during the day and fall to around 1000 metres by the end of the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: After a dry start precipitation fell as snow only on the higher summits during the morning but to gradually lower levels in the afternoon. Strong Southerly winds, easing from mid-afternoon. The freezing level rose to around 1200 metres at midday and then started dropping again. ObservedSnowStability: Wet snow surface instabilities were present mainly on steep North-West to North-East aspects above 1000 metres. As the temperature dropped in the afternoon fresh unstable windslab accumulated mainly on North to East aspects above 900 metres. Aspects exposed to the strong winds were generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
